APC, SLPP PMDC lock horns in Pujehun
The three main political parties; the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC), the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), and the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), have agreed to maintain the peace ahead of the Saturday May 8, Parliamentary bye elections in Constituency Ninety-one in Makpele and Sorogbema Chiefdoms, Pujehun District.
The agreement was reached at a meeting organised by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) at the Zimmi Court Barray on Thursday. Earlier, tension was high among supporters of candidates for the parliamentary bye elections. Reports say there is a huge presence of government officials, ministers and top party members of the APC, SLPP and PMDC. The SLPP Regional Chairman South Joseph Kpulum had accused the APC of importing thugs from Liberia led by an ex-combatant called General Jeggae.
The APC candidate Sylvester Massaquoi denied the allegations and described the said General Jeggae as a “son of the soil and brother†who had been vital in his campaign. The Deputy Minister of Labour Moijueh Kai Kai also accused the SLPP of bringing in ex-Civil Defence Force fighters to disrupt the election. The PMDC aspirant Alie Bao on the other hand said they had received reports that both the ruling APC party and the main opposition SLPP were mobilizing thugs to cause havoc on polling day. Â
However, police at the Zimmi Police Station and the Paramount Chief of Makpele Chiefdom Alhaji Prince Metzger Gbondo Konneh the Second said they were not aware of any thugs imported into the constituency for the elections.
