Reproductive Health Division on long term family planning

The Reproductive Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has commenced a two week capacity building programme on the insertion of long term family planning. The reversible contraceptive will help to minimize unwanted pregnancy and the high rate of teenage pregnancy as well.

Mid wives and other nurses working in different health facilities in the Western Area are benefiting from the training.

Expanding access to family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services is one of the best investments a country can make. FP/RH services can improve women and children’s overall health, reduce maternal and child mortality, and help prevent HIV.

Investing in FP/RH can also help check rapid population growth—a major challenge for many developing countries. Rapid population growth restricts prospects for social and economic development, affecting education, health, agriculture and food security, environment and land use, employment and the labor force. Meeting unmet need for family planning can check rapid population growth, saving countries millions in health costs, averting maternal and child deaths, lowering education costs, and helping to reduce poverty and spur economic growth. A relatively modest investment in FP/RH services today can yield substantial future savings.

Access to FP/RH services also helps promote gender equality, increasing women’s power over reproductive choices and expanding their social and economic opportunities.

Family planning allows individuals and couples to anticipate and attain their desired number of children and the spacing and timing of their births. It is achieved through use of contraceptive methods and the treatment of involuntary infertility. A woman’s ability to space and limit her pregnancies has a direct impact on her health and well-being as well as on the outcome of each pregnancy.

In Sierra Leone the Government has establish the fact that access to family planning services should be free in all Government hospitals, health centre’s Peripheral health centre. That’s why more training on the insertion of long term method is been provided for nurses across the country

Programme Manager, Reproductive Health, Ministry of Health Dr. Suliaman Conteh discloses that the intake of the long term method Jadel and coil among women and girls, is very high adding that service will also been provided for free at the PCMH and the Lumley Government hospital Freetown during the two weeks training.

He stated that the capacity building in collaboration with the District Health Management Team will provide quality service for clients in all hospitals.

Senior Reproductive Health Sister, Sallay Crew is one of the facilitators, she says that the practical aspect of the training is very important, as the nurses will be embarking on different types of skills regarding the insertion and the nurses will be later divided in to two groups in various hospitals to provide the service.

She commended the United Nations Population Fund and the world health organization for supporting the ministry with different family planning commodities to prevent unwanted pregnancies and teenage pregnancy. In the capacity building programme for long term insertion is ongoing.
