ACC capacitates local councils and CSOS in southern region
Corruption continues to devastate the economy of Sierra Leone due to the unpatriotism of some Sierra Leoneans, Deputy Director of Public Education and External Outreach Patrick Sandi told local and district councils staff including civil society organizations (CSOs) at an advocacy campaign held at the Methodist Resource Centre in Bo. He stated that, the meeting was to capacitate district councils and CSOs in the Southern Region to enable them monitor government projects so that they are implemented according to specifications.
The capacity meeting is a testament to show that the ACC’s work is not only about prosecution, but also to empower citizens with the right skills to effectively hold duty bearers accountable. He added that there had been instances in which greedy individuals had squandered State resources at the detriment of the general populace and mostly such individuals had faced the wrath of the law. He told the meeting that the Commission will continue to take all necessary steps to deal with all forms of corruption.
The two-day advocacy meeting, which took place in Bo City, was supported by the European Union (EU).
Welcoming participants, Senior Investigating Officer Musa Jawara admonished all participants to make effective use of the skills acquired during the two-day training. Mr. Jawara told participants to ensure that government projects in their localities are properly monitored, and that funds are judiciously utilized for the benefit of the people.
Deputy Mayor, Mohamed Wurie Jalloh, applauded the ACC for the engagement and noted that project implementation is also disturbed due to delay in funding. He also called on participants to fully engaged contractors and MDAs when ever government project are assigned to specific district or localities.
Addressing participants, the facilitator Ibrahim Turay said the training, which he described as a citizens’ monitoring tool, is meant to empower the participants to engage in comprehensive monitoring of government funded projects.
Similar engagement will be carried out on Wednesday 22nd June 2016 in Kenema for the Eastern region.
