NATCOM embarks on ultra-modern construction

Vice President Dr. Victor Bockarie Foh last week Thursday formally did the turning of the sod of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) new headquarters building at South Ridge, Hill Station, at the back of US Embassy.

The historic occasion attracted several Government officials, mobile operators, diplomats and dignitaries from various walks of life, media practitioners and concerned citizens.

In his keynote address as Guest of Honour, Vice President Dr. Victor B. Foh the NATCOM building project is very dear to the heart of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma despite he was not chanced to witness the turning of the sod ceremony.

The Vice President explained the background of NATCOM as telecommunications regulators in Sierra Leone since it was established by an Act of Parliament in 2006, and how it has been revolutionalized under the chairmanship of Mr. Momoh K. Konte.

According to Vice President Foh, NATCOM started operation at the State Lodge until it had enough funds to rent an office owned by Sierratel, adding that the Commission bought the building in 2009.

He expressed his satisfaction over the rapid growth of the Commission, noting that currently NATCOM has six zonal officers in Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Kono, Port Loko and Moyamba respectively.

Vice President Foh said despite NATCOM had numerous challenges at the initial stage of its establishment; the Commission continued to thrive through hard work and dedication.

“The NATCOM Board, Chairman, Management and Staff are growing,” he said.

The Vice President also appealed for the NATCOM staff to be capacitated, empowered and be given the conducive physical environment to reflect the President’s Agenda for Prosperity.

NATCOM proposed building

The Vice President also said when the building is completed probably between 18-20 months, it would send out the right message of how the telecommunications landscape of Sierra Leone has been transformed to international best practice.

In his brief statement, Chairman NATCOM Board of Directors, Mr. Momoh Konte, felt honoured that it is under his watch that NATCOM has embarked on such development – the construction of two floors and seven story headquarters building.

He also spoke of the revolution that is taking place at NATCOM such as the landing and launching of the fiber optic to enhance the affordability of communication in the country.

Chairman Momoh Konte said Sierra Leoneans must be proud of the building project.

The Project Consultant, Mr. Thomas Koroma, gave an overview of the nine-storey building which he said was initiated a year ago when the Management of NATCOM thought it expedient to secure the services of T&S Co. Architects, Engineers & Builders Consortium in 2015.
