Gloucester village is suffering
Let me at the outset state here that Gloucester is part of the Mountain Rural District.
I will try to say by definition what Gloucester is in terms of agriculture. It is an agrarian community with the population density of over ten thousand inhabitants. The indigenes of Gloucester are constantly engaged in vegetable production, such as salad, lettuce, tomatoes, carrot, etc. They are the principal suppliers of vegetable foodstuff to consumers in the Freetown Municipality.
When one goes to Salad Ground or Krootown Road market, one will see the products of Gloucester on nearly every table. This simply demonstrates that the average Sierra Leonean is not a lazy character in the rural area like Gloucester village in the Mountain Rural District. The only problem at the moment for that community is the road network.
Two years ago, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) promised that the road leading to Gloucester from Leister Junction will be on course. The news was received with happiness and great expectations by the community people. It is pathetic, however, to note that the road is still deplorable and if it is not resurfaced or rehabilitated right to the top of the mountain by the end of April when the rains will begin to fall, the people in that environment will suffer.
What is disappointing about the ugly situation in Gloucester in Constituency 92 is that there are personalities, including the Member of Parliament, Hon. Patteh Bah, Councillor, Village Headman and Community Chairman, who are very insensitive to the plight of the electorate that gave them the mandate. It was easy for them to become what they are today but sooner or later, they will go back to solicit their support. Sadly, however, they will have no scope to convince the people to vote them again because in seeking the support of the people as a Member of Parliament, Councillor, Village Headman or Chairman, you need to outline your stewardship during your tenure of office. And the truth is that the current personalities holding those positions in the community have nothing to show for their stewardship while Gloucester continues to suffer.
