Speaking to members of parliament on the safe abortion bill which was levied at parliament for consultation and education, Dr. Roland Williamson Taylor in his presentation discussed two main methods on safe abortion, adding that there are two methods the surgical methods and the medical methods
The surgical method which ranging up to twelve and fourteen weeks and it is at this point that they are now using the Manual Vacuum Aspiration and the Electric Vacuum Aspiration maintaining that the Dilatation and Evacuation method
The Medical Abortion which is up to nine weeks their by using the Mifepristone and Misoprostol but when Mifepristone is not available you can use the Misoprostol alone
Dr, Taylor also ask question as to whether the Health system equipped to to implement the Abortion Bill. One of the issues is regarded due to the prevalence of women needing post Abortion care as a result of unsafe abortion, adding that the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has developed technical guidelines disclosing that our health system is already dealing with thousand of women in Sierra Leone who seek treatment for complications from unsafe abortion performed outside the health facilities putting large burden on our health system
He disclosed that in 2013 the Ministry of Health reported almost 20 percent of obstetric complications admissions were for abortion complications
Adding that the W.H.O guidance strongly recommends task sharing for abortion and contraception it is safe , effective .
Women often prefer midlevel providers in his call to action he commended Hon Isata Kabia who brought the safe abortion bill in 2015 to parliament forwarded as a private members bill thereby recognizing the important benefit it could bring to the women of Sierra Leone.
