SLPP flag bearer aspirants form association

One of the twelve flag bearer aspirants of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Mr. Franklyn Rogers, has disclosed that eleven of them have formed the All Aspirants Association (AAA).

Mr. Franklyn Rogers was part of Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella’s convoy that visited the Southern Region city of Bo on Friday, 27th November, 2015 as a demonstration of peace and unity among the eleven flag-bearer aspirants.

He stated that only the former SLPP Presidential candidate in the 2012 Presidential election, Mr. Julius Maada Bio is not part of that association.

According to Mr. Franklyn Rogers, the peace process in the party is in progress and that all the eleven flag bearer aspirants often meet to chart the way forward, adding all of them met twice at the office of Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella before their visit to Bo.

He lamented that Julius Maada Bio is the only flag bearer aspirant that is reluctant to join the peace process, noting that twice he has declined to attend the peace process upon the invitations of the Chief Mediator, Bishop Emeritus Joseph Christian Humper and the SLPP Northern America Branch.

Mr. Franklyn Rogers further stated that they would not wait for Mr. Julius Maada Bio to join the peace process and that they have already suggested to the SLPP National Executive Council (NEC) that the next flag bearer election should not be based on simple majority but the winner should poll 51% of the votes cast.

In his lecture, Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella emphasized that Sierra Leonean leaders must show a new way to lead as transformation and governance are very important for national development, adding that Sierra Leoneans have to care and not to base national politics on tribalism or regionalism.

He maintained that Sierra Leone should not be so poor “because we are from war,” noting that “there are other countries that have gone through wars but they are better than us despite we have more natural resources than those countries.”

Dr. Yumkella stressed that “We the leaders must show a new way to lead,” since the previous leaderships have failed the nation.

Former Mayor of Bo, Dr. Wusu Sannoh, who chaired the occasion, remarked that when good people fail to do anything, evil will triumph.

“I won’t sit by to see what our ancestors have achieved to be destroyed because we have failed to do something to rectify those situation,” the Chairman asserted, adding, “You’ll be rewarded according to your contribution to your community.”

Dr. Wusu Sannoh showered praises on Alhaji Dr. Yumkella for his shrewd academic brilliance and contributions to both national and international developments, noting that the former International Civil Servant is a doyen of the international community.

Speaker after speaker commended Alhaji Dr. Yumkella’s exemplary representation of his country in the international community and his efforts to bring many development programmes to Sierra Leone before his resignation from the United Nations late this year.
