Third SLAJ Monthly Symposium

Third SLAJ Monthly Symposium

Freetown, April 26: The third edition of the SLAJ Monthly Symposium will be held on Friday, 30th April 2010 at 9:00 AM at the association’s conference hall at 56 Campbell Street, Freetown. The association wishes to invite all journalists to this symposium which comes up immediately after Sierra Leone’s 49th Independence Anniversary celebration.

The topic for the symposium is: Journalism in Sierra Leone since Independence: The Way Forward

Eminent personalities with varying degrees of practical and academic experiences as journalists have consented to serve as speakers during the symposium. They include; Dr. Joseph Findley, former employee of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service and now Lecturer in the Post Graduate Programme in the Mass Communication Department, Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone; Mr. Olu Awonoor Gordon, Editor of Peep Magazine;  Mr. Umaru Fofana, President of SLAJ and BBC Correspondent. Mrs. Bernadette Cole, Chairperson, Independent Media Commission (IMC) and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone has also consented to chair the session. Some future journalists of Sierra Leone, students from the Faculty of Arts will also be joining the panel.

The rationale for the topic is for journalists to reflect on the history of their profession; critically analyse its present status and proffer solutions as to how the sector can contribute positively towards the socio-economic and political developments of Sierra Leone.

This symposium is an opportunity for journalists to learn from the experiences of their senior colleagues who are role models today in their own rights, in the practice of journalism in the country. It is also an opportunity for young journalists to learn from their predecessors and discuss ways to prevent the mistakes of the past, and use the positive lessons to ensure a vibrant and effective future media sector for Sierra Leone.

The two previous symposia were successful by the estimation of all those who attended, as they were educative and informative on the topics around which they were conducted. This April session can only be more successful.

The SLAJ Monthly symposium is funded and co-organised by the BBC World Service Trust. The aim of the symposium is to build the capacity of the media in Sierra Leone as well as engender healthy and well-informed debates on key issues of national importance.
