The Administration operates and governs the registry in accordance with the Sierra Leone Merchant Shipping Act, 2003. It is conducting vessels registration and seafarers certification with the aim to ensure safety of life at sea and protection of the marine environment in order for vessels under the registry to be fit for service for which are intended and are manned with competent marine personnel.
It is aimed at continuing improving and simplifies the registration procedures which have been established to be easy to follow without the burden of documentation.
As one of the sources of government revenue collection, the Maritime Administration is currently plagued with lots of detractors, whose aim is to selfishly fill their pocket at the detriment of the consolidated revenue fund.
What has come out clean is the fact that bad blood is currently flowing in the country’s Maritime Administration where some detractors have formed themselves into saboteurs of the current Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Wurroh Jalloh, who has fought tooth and nail to let the government institution gained its lost glory.
Report states that the government revenue base from the Administration will soon be hampered by the detractors as they are currently using their god-fathers to deprive the nation of its needed revenue.
The detractors are coming at a time when the Maritime administration has scored lots of success and have put in place positive plans that are in line of the Government Agenda for Prosperity.
Report states that Alhaji Wurroh Jalloh inherited 42 staffs, which has increased to over 170 (with five Directors inclusive). His administration also succeeded in purchasing five brand new search, rescue and other monitoring operations boats, which is why the country has so clock about a whole year with recording a single accident at sea. About ten thousand life- jackets are about to be purchased for the safety of sea passengers.
These successes have made Sierra Leone to be a hub for maritime activities in Africa. It can be recalled that The Gambia had to contact the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration to set up its Maritime Administration, and other countries are now contacting the Administration for advises and experience sharing.
Sources say this will soon be hampered if the Board and the powers that be don’t overhaul the Sierra Leone maritime Administration by separating the ‘sheep from the goats’.
Report further states that the Administration is currently full of unqualified staff, most of who were filled in by the former head, Philip Lukulay, who did virtually nothing to let the government institution fulfilled its mandate.
