Ways to prevent another historic flood disaster

Professor Parrot greatly regrets the historic rain flood calamity that has befallen our capital city, Freetown, and extends his deepest sympathy to all those who in diverse ways suffered from the unprecedented rain catastrophe, special condolence to families of those who drowned in the sweeping flood waters.

However, the candid creature is with the view that many of those in the slum areas who suffered the disaster are victims of their own stubbornness by insisting on living in disaster prone areas despite persistent warning from the Environmental Protection Agency to them to quit those dangerous settlements. Now they have suffered the obvious consequences of squatting in environmentally hazardous settlements.

The bird who is an environmental and climatic scientist is prescribing ten ways of preventing a recurrence of another rain flood disaster of such grave dimension. The following are the best way to avoid flood troubles:

  1. Sierra Leoneans must be fully encouraged to continue dwelling in the bays, along the sea shores, in the swamps, on the hilltops and under the bridges and culverts and in other slum settlements. These are the safest areas to dwell as they are not prone to rain flood disaster.
  2. Sierra Leoneans must continue their deforestation drive and ensure that all the forests are cleared away as forests are the main causes of heavy rains and flooding; no forest, no rain, no flood disaster.
  3. Sierra Leoneans must ensure that all the shallow drainages must be converted to permanent dustbins where garbage must be deposited at random; drainages full of garbage can facilitate fast and free flow of rain water and prevent rain flood. In fact, if all our shallow drainages in our capital city were full of more garbage, the historic rain flood will never have as the mountains of garbage in the gutters would have stopped the rain water from overflowing into houses and on the streets.
  4. Sierra Leoneans must make ip a policy to be constructing massive houses along water ways to prevent rain water from passing through the water ways; that can help a long way in preventing another unforgettable rain flood disaster.
  5. Very beautiful low cost houses must be built right on top of the notorious Samba gutter to serve as a barrier to the flowing rain water; this can prevent the rain water from overflowing and causing disaster.
