We need to develop the country for ordinary people….says Maada Bio
The former Head of State and 2012 Presidential Candidate of the SLPP, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio (in photo) has told listeners in Sierra Leone that we need to develop the country for ordinary people.
Speaking from London in a radio interview on Kiss 104 FM on Thursday 27th August 2015 regarding a range of issues Rtd. Brig. Juius Maada Bio thanked the people of Bo District and across Sierra Leone for the strong show of support even in his absence. A Confident Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio told listeners “I want to assure everybody that no one will stop us this time round”.
Asked about his message to Sierra Leoneans, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio said that the country should be developed so that ordinary people will have access to education, good health facilities and the many opportunities in life. In a very passionate voice, he said “I want to lead a government which puts people at the centre so that by the time I leave government people will say we have moved on from where we were when I took over. I promise to offer a disciplined leadership and not just cosmetic changes which people do not see the benefit of change.”
Clarifying the cheap propaganda which has been used by certain detractors that Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio is not contesting anymore as a flagbearer aspirant, he told the listeners that the course he is leading is not about him rather it is about the lives, future, hopes and many aspirations of people who believe in him. He said that he will never abandon the people and he will continue to carry the aspirations of many people until victory is won. He declared “I will stand by you. I will lead you and victory is in sight.”
Asked about the way forward for the SLPP, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio re-echoed an earlier message he had given during a Monologue Interview that a transparent, free and fair flagbeareship elections where someone emerges as the credible flagbearer will help to unite the party. He stated that he is the most experience aspirant who had been contesting since 2005 and argued that as long as many people have interests in contesting for flagbearership that will always create different groupings even with our collective efforts to unite the party.
Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio also had a message for women across the country. He told his listeners that women are his strongest support base in the country and he believed that they should be partners in development and not just there to go to the kitchen. He reminded the people that as a result of his appreciation of women that was why he appointed a respected woman as her running mate in 2012 elections because he holds women in the highest esteem.
As expected his message for the people of Sierra Leone and the SLPP was political and reassuring. Missing the people, he assured them that in September he will be coming home and looks forward to come and speak to them. He told the listeners that his father was not a founding member of the SLPP but in his home district of Bonthe which was dominated by PMDC 96% of the people voted for the SLPP in the 2012 elections. He said that as a party in the last elections we had 37% even after all the malpractices therefore we should not risk all the hard-work we have done because we only need to top up in the next elections.
Without mincing his words he joked that we must not also risk the destiny of the party into the hands of someone who has never voted in Sierra Leone, never voted for the SLPP and cannot even boast of having a constituency he has delivered for SLPP. He told the listeners that in the last elections the people did not get what they voted for but that in the next coming elections the people will get what they vote for. He reminded the people that he did not buy them with money but it was because of their natural love and therefore nobody should buy them with money. He rhetorically asked that if one does not know the constituency chairmen, used to speak to people and know the grassroots of the party how can he lead the party? He dismissed his critics by eloquently saying that few people say that he will not win a general election but if President Koroma contested in 2002, had about 23% and became president in 2007 how much more for him who had 37% in 2012 elections?
Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio confidently ended his interview by saying that there are two most popular politicians in Sierra Leone, the one is not contesting in the next election but he will be contesting to lead the SLPP therefore he assured the listeners “stay strong, we are on the right path, we will win the next elections and we are the straightest line to State House”.
The radio interview was sponsored and organised by Youth in Action for Julius Maada Bio which is a grassroots and young people campaign mobilisation group which has been established to promote the candidacy of Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio to be re-elected as the SLPP flagbearer and become the next president of Sierra Leone. According to reports, the masterpiece interview led to wild jubilation amongst the people of Bo district last night.
