APPA Gets New Interim Executive

The Association also elected Alhaji Ben Kamara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Interim Secretary General and Kelfala Kosia of the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP) as the Public Relations Officer.
In his statement, the Chairman of the occasion who is also the Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and Commissioner of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) Mohamed Nfa Alie Conteh thanked the outgoing executive for work done in the past one year. Political Parties he says are very important to the political and electoral processes on the one hand and to democracy in general. Elections he says are key to democracy as democracy has so many pillars.
In his statement, the outgoing Interim Chairman of the Association Mohamed Bangura of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) appreciated the effort of the Chairman of PPRC and staff, as the most formidable entity ever.
During his stewardship as Interim Chairman of the Association, Mr Bangura says APPA made remarkable contributions in the fight against Ebola Virus Disease, mediated between and among members of political parties, advocated for the provision of subvention for political parties, postponement of the census, engagement with the office of the President in relaxing the State of Emergency restrictions to name but a few.
He assured members of the association that he will continue to participate and support the activities of the Association as a member.
In his keynote address the Chairman of PPRC Hon. Justice M.E. Tolla Thompson started by subscribing to the view of President Barrack Obama that Africa needs strong institutions, but also believed that Africa needs strong leaders. He noted that when he came to PPRC, APPA was asleep, but with the political will of the political party leaders, APPA was revived.
Justice Thompson encouraged political parties to continue to contribute to national issues, and that they should take the governance processes very serious. He informed the political parties that he is not bent on deregistering them, but to enhance their role in the nation’s growing democracy.
