Presenting a letter of Appointment to the newly appointed Acting, Western Area Loko Tribal Head, Alhaji Alpha Sesay at a ceremony held at her ministry’s conference hall, Youyi Building on Tuesday, 28th July, 2015, Madam Konomanyi said the decision to appoint the new chief was in response to a petition filed against the suspended Western Area Loko Tribal Head, Alhaji Kandeh Aruna Sesay by his compatriots with a view to bringing lasting peace and ensure national cohesion.
As their supervisory ministry, Madam Konomanyi said it is their responsibility to ensure unity prevails among tribal authorities and their communities and warned tribal heads not to perform duties out of their purview. “You are Head men but that does not make you paramount chiefs”, she cautioned.
The Local government minister noted that the rift existing among Loko Tribal Heads and compatriots is not very prevalent among other tribes in the country and called on the new Loko Tribal Head to ensure peace and unity prevail among them. She reminded the New Headman about his responsibilities, including those of assisting the police in the discharge of their duties, complimenting the effort of Local Councils in collecting taxes and acting as liaison between her ministry and their communities on matters relating to national development, among others.
“Use your wisdom and try as much as you can to bring your people together”, she entreated the new tribal head and thanked the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Administrative team for their courage and resilience in ensuring the situation is addressed. Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hadiru Ibrahim Kaloko, underscored that the principal role of the tribal heads is to mediate and maintain peace and unity in their areas of jurisdiction. He advised the new tribal head to meet and embrace the erstwhile tribal head as a gesture of reconciliation and reaffirmed his ministry’s desire to foster peace, unity and development among communities.
Receiving his letter of appointment, the Acting Loko Tribal Head and former Director of Procurement, Sierra Leone Ports Authority, Alhaji Alpha Sesay thanked Government for the confidence reposed in him and promised to do his utmost to ensure he lives up to expectation. Chairman, Council of Tribal heads in the Western Area, Chief, Mathew Jibao Younge, thanked the ministry for inviting them, describing the gesture as a manifestation of the ministry’s confidence and trust in local authorities.
Present at the ceremony, were the Director of Local Government and Rural Development, Emkay Magba-Kamara, Deputy Secretary, S. Alighali, some family members of the new chief and local chiefs.
