Sanusi Jabbie, a wonder-kid in the making
Ask many Sierra Leoneans to name you some of the top football clubs in England and with breakneck speed akin to the sound of thunder, they would name the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and even Blackpool without a pause. Not anyone, I bet would go the extra mile to mention Cheshunt Football Club for the name itself is strange if not almost unknown. However, among its junior leagues is a kid showing his footballing skills with the under 9 elite team.
Like his soccer idol, Christiano Ronaldo who was introduced to the game of football through his dad’s work as an equipment manager at a boy’s club in Portugal, 8-year- old Dutch-born and England raised Sanusie Jabbie (Pictured) has one goal in mind -to be the best in the game of football.
However, should his dream come true, the question is; between Holland, England and Sierra Leone, which national team would win the jersey of this young sensation in the making?
His dreams are big. With a lot of priorities and also, not abandoning school where his best subject is Literature, the wunderkind who is likewise, of Sierra Leonean origin through his mum, Haja Ramatu and dad, Ishmail has already started dreaming of lifting trophies like the World Cup, the championship league and even the Ballon D’or.
His dad is an avid supporter of Liverpool and to make him proud, Sanusi who currently captain’s the Cheshunt FC (Black) in the Mid Herts under 9 elite seven aside football league is also thinking of playing and winning laurels for the, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ outfit.
With the round leather object, he dribbles and dazzles especially when he plays in the defence or as a central midfielder. Every Tuesday and Thursday, Sanusi, a pupil at the St. Andrew’s Primary School in Enfield, London would put aside his school work for his training boots and session in readiness for his league’s every Saturday matches. Before joining Cheshunt, he played for the Turnstyles Academy in the Under 8 elite league in London. It was here that he was spotted by a Cheshunt scout and then signed for the previous season.
“I love it and growing up in England where football is a religion in addition to my dad is the extra motivation that has inspired me to develop interest in football,” the shy and soft-spoken Sanusi said.
His dad, who continues to sacrifice time and energy to ensure that Sanusi achieves his dream, says the young prodigy is a delight to watch.
“At an early age, you could sense the determination in him to make it to the highest echelons of soccer and I am prepared to stand by him every step of the way,” he said.
An admirer of his son, he identifies slide tackle, making passes and free kicks as traits the young Captain has started showing even in his formative years.
Since he joined the new club, he has been playing friendly matches and tournaments and according to the dad, “this is what earned him the captaincy especially for his leadership role during the training sessions.” No wonder this season, they have been promoted from the under 8 elite team to the under 9.
Like every other young kid, Sanusi also dedicates his time playing or taking part in athletics, formula 1 motorsport and video games. For his mum, “with all of these, Sanusi continues to do his chores at home perfectly and his grades in school are also very good. We are proud of our young him,” she said.
Asked what country would she want to see her son to play for should he excel in football, without doubt, she said, “I will be happy to go down to the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown to see him wearing the green, white and blue colors of our national team but that is a decision for him to make, but these are early days yet.”
His career may still be in its infancy but that he now captain’s his Cheshunt Football Club under 9 team is a sign of greater things to come and we will be following every step of his journey as we wait with baited breathe on what country he will ultimately sign up for.
Will it be Holland where he was born? Will it be England where he presently resides with his parents or Sierra Leone, the land where his mum and dad hail from? The waiting for now will continue.
