Condemning Irregular Payment of Subsidies
It is an open secret that, over the years, the Government of Sierra Leone has not been treating with deserved seriousness, especially primary education, as manifested by the persistent irregular payment of subsidies to primary schools.
Most primary schools across the country have been almost always stranded the undue delay in the payment of subsidies which they use to run the schools. Even now, Government is yet to pay subsidies to many primary schools, a situation that has been financially embarrassing the heads of the affected schools, some of whom are heavily indebted by the loans they obtain to run the schools while some others use their own meager salaries.
This press categorically condemns such an unfortunate situation affecting the primary and holds the view that it has the highest potential to destroy primary education.
The saddest part of it is that government has long made it a crime for primary school heads to collect school fees after the enactment of free education for primary schools. Government pledged to be paying school fees for all the pupils in government-assisted schools in the form of subsidies but the persistent delay in paying the subsidies has been a serious headache for heads of primary schools.
This has been severely undermining the effectiveness of our primary education which is the foundation on which secondary and tertiary education rest.
Government must try to be paying school subsidies on a regular basis to allow primary school heads to run their schools effectively.
