NATCOM Gives Two Weeks Ultimatum … For SIM/UIM Registration
Sierra Leone’s telecommunications regulatory body, the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), has given two weeks ultimatum to all Telecom Operators to duly register their subscribers or face the appropriate regulatory measures provided by the law.
In a public notice to the effect, NATCOM raised serious concern over the widespread unethical and criminal use of unregistered SIM and UIM cards by unscrupulous members of the public who are bent on wrecking havoc and cannot be easily identified.
The commission noted that some of the complaints arising from this unlawful practice have been the subject matter of police investigations but much has not been achieved due to the fact that the identities of the defaulters remain unknown.
NATCOM also expressed worries over the grave implication such immoral and criminal use of unregistered SIM and UIM cards pose on national security the consequences of which will serve only the devil’s interest.
The commission, therefore, demanded full compliance from Telecom Operators by ensuring that existing and potential subscribers to all networks are duly registered so that they can be identified when necessary.
According to NATCOM, the deadline for full compliance of the said regulation is 13th July, 2015. The commission disclosed its intention to embark on a very robust monitoring exercise to ensure compliance.
The commission also encouraged members of the public to also play a positive role in ensuring that their service providers register their SIM and UIM cards upon purchase as a civic responsibility to the state and the communities.
