Parliament Engages Agriculture Ministry

The Parliamentary Committee on Transparency and Accountability, Chaired by Hon. Cluade DM Kamanda, on Friday the 5th of June 2015, engaged Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security on information sharing on the operations of the Agriculture Business Centers and the private sector development on agriculture in the country, at Committee Room 1 Parliament Building. The Chairman of the Committee in his opening remarks note that, the Transparency and Accountability Committee in Parliament has a mandate to investigate all Ministries, Department, and Agencies (MDAs) in the country in terms of compliances on roles and functions of MDAs. Chairman further maintained that, Transparency and Accountability Committee will be going on an oversight to visits all agriculture centers in the country to find out the operations of Agriculture Business Center Projects (ABC) and agreement on memorandum of understanding on the private sector development in the country.

Briefing the Committee, the permanent Secretary, of the Ministry, Mr. Edward Kargbo, outline the functions , operations, units heads and planned of actions of the Ministry in the development of agriculture in the country.

Mr. Edward Kargbo briefed the Committee on the activities of Agriculture Business Centers (ABC) project in the country and dilated on the functions, roles and challenges of the project.

Head of Agribusiness Promotion, in the Ministry, Mr. Aiah J.Thorlie, briefed the Committee on the operations of the private sectors in the agriculture field .He informed Committee Members, that the private sectors are doing well in promotions on agriculture in the country but however briefed the committee on the challenges faced with the sectors in the development of agriculture in the country. He promised the Committee that before Parliament will be going out on their oversight functions, all necessary documentations will provided.

Committee Members, asked questions reengaging from funds provided to ABC project and private sectors Company on agriculture operating in the country.

In the information sharing process, the Committee resolved that the Ministry should provide, all memorandum of understanding of Agricultural company operating in the country, each ABC centers operations and locations and funds provided, seeds money, construction of market, feeders roads, surface rent on land used, funding agencies supporting agriculture Ministry and three years update on fertilizes supplied to farmers..
