100 Nigerian Medics to Help Fight Ebola
In response to the clarion call of the African Union (AU) to support Sierra Leone in the fight against the Ebola virus disease, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has assisted Sierra Leone with 100 Nigerian Medics including doctors, nurses, Laboratory Technicians and Contact Tracers to help fight the Ebola disease in the country. Receiving the Nigerian Medical Team at the Freetown International Airport Lungi, on Friday December 5, 2014, the Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation I, Mr. Foday Sawi on behalf of the Ministry, government and people of Sierra Leone, lauded the government of Nigeria for the invaluable contribution to help Sierra Leone in the fight to contain the disease.
He said Nigeria has always been with Sierra Leone in difficult times citing the role played during the eleven years civil war.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mrs. Ebun Strasser-King described the intervention as timely, and expressed thanks and appreciation to the AU under whose auspices they are here to help fight the Ebola disease.
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Mrs. Gladys Modupeola Quist-Adebiyi expressed gratitude to her fellow Nigerians for their courage to come and deliver their service.
She described the Sierra Leone situation as a difficult moment for Nigeria, expressing the need for Nigeria to respond to the clarion call to join Sierra Leone in kicking Ebola out of the country.
Team Leader, African Union (AU) Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa [ASEOWA], Dr. Ssekiloleko Richard disclosed that the 100 medics are among the 350 Nigerian Medics to support the three main Ebola affected countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone as response to the AU call for the intervention of African countries in the fight against the Ebola virus disease. The move he said, is part of the Africa Union support to the government of Sierra Leone towards the eradication of the disease.
Director General, Centre for Disease Control and Head of the Delegation, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, opined that the 100 personnel would be posted in different Epicenters which include Port Loko, Bombaili, Makeni, Kambia through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
