Remember Ghana, Adamu tells WAFU teams
WAFU President, Dr. Amos Adamu, has urged West African countries not to forget how Ghana moulded the team that won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt and went further to present almost the same team in the Angola Nations Cup where they won the silver, losing to Egypt in the final this January. Adamu reacted this way yesterday: “The Ghana team that caused global sensation, the team that beat Brazil to win the Under-20 World Cup had their first major outing in our WAFU competition in Delta just two years ago. That was how they moulded that team. They went to Egypt and won. They took the same players to the Nations Cup and got to the final. Most of those players are World Cup bound. They will be in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That is positive progression. The story of that Ghana’s team started in WAFU competition. That is why I am urging all the West African countries, especially those participating in this year’s event to take the competition seriously. It is a huge development programme that all West African countries must strive to benefit from. The players are young, they are in the Under-20 age category and they have chance to grow and become the stars of tomorrow. That is why the competition should mean a lot to us all. We can’t forget the Ghana feat.†Nigeria will play the opening match in Abeokuta against Benin Republic on Friday at 3pm. Senegal and Guinea will take to the field for the second match at 5 pm. Ghana and Togo will kick off the Group B hostilities at the Gateway Stadium Ijebu-Ode at the weekend. Their tie will be followed by Burkina Faso and Liberia match at 5 pm.
