Educational Windfall: Venezuela offers thirty full-scholarships to Sierra Leoneans

Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Henry O. Macauley has today Wednesday April 7th handed over thirty (30) Sierra Leonean Passports including completed visa application forms and other supporting documents in respect of accepted candidates for the Government of Venezuelan Scholarship, to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Ambassador Extra Ordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sierra Leone H.E. Enrique Fernando Arrundell James in Abuja, Nigeria.

Handing over the Passports, birth certificates, educational certificates/statements  and visa application forms, to H.E. Enrique Fernando Arrundell James,  H.E. Henry O Macauley said “ I bring the Passports and other Documents in person, in a bid to underscore the importance my country and in particular, President Ernest Bai Koroma attaches to education and the gesture from your country. “Successful candidates were carefully and  qualitatively selected on the basis of qualification, by a combined team of Sierra Leonean and Venezuelan Authorities in Freetown, Sierra Leone with deliberate gender, religious and ethnic balance as a policy.

He said the ages of the thirty (30) students are between twenty six (26) and Eighteen (18) years respectively.

“Out of the thirty (30) students, twelve (12) are female out of which nine (9) will be studying various disciplines in Medicine, two (2) will be studying Tourism, while one (1) will study Business Administration.

Similarly, ten (10) out of the eighteen male Students will study diverse courses in Medicine, three (3) will pursue various courses in information Technology, two (2) will study civil Engineering, one (1) will study Agriculture and the rest (1) will study Business Administration and (1) Tourism respectively.

H.E. Henry O Macauley thanked the Venezuelan envoy “for his brotherly support” and said the number of scholarships will definitely benefit both individuals and the country.

“The scholarships will contribute to the Human Resource development of Sierra Leone, which will certainly improve on the status of literate and professional Sierra Leoneans. For individuals, the potential benefits lie in general quality of life. That is economically – sustained satisfying employment. “For the Country, the potential benefits lie in economic growth and the development of shared values which is part of our Government policy”. His Excellency, while thanking you, I look forward to receiving more from Venezuela.

 Receiving the passports, Ambassador Enrique Fernando Arrundell James thanked High Commissioner Macauley for his perseverance in ensuring the success of the process. The Venezuelan envoy said each student will cost the Venezuelan Government one Hundred Thousand United States Dollars ($100.000) and said, the Passports are going to be Visa”d” here in Nigeria and will be handed back to you here in Nigeria. He praised the effort of High Commissioner Macauley for fulfilling the demands of the Venezuelan Government within a very short notice and wished him well.
