Bishop Humper reveals $50,000 peace project for SLPP
Chairman and Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Chief Somano Kapen, has pleaded with all party members to seek peace for the party to bounce back to power in the 2018 general elections.
He made this plea on 24th July, 2014 during a press conference at the party’s headquarter office at Wallace Johnson Street, Freetown. The conference, which was more of a family meeting, was convened by the Reverend Bishop Emeritus Joseph Humper and other stakeholders as a way of settling the protracted disputes that have put the party in disarray.
The occasion which attracted many party elders was climaxed by the Somano Kapen’s comment, “It is men who bring conflict, breed it and sustain it, therefore, we need reconciliation and dialogue to end the conflict.”
Chairman Kapen went on that his ideals stand for peace, which is one of the fundamental principles on which the founding fathers built the party, pointing out that the SLPP derives its creed from the national emblem which symbolizes Unity, Freedom and Justice.
Chairing the occasion, Hon. Emmanuel Grant, stated court cases cannot help the party as the outcome of such cases can only succeed in further dividing the party, stressing that reconciliation is the most powerful weapon the party can use to get back in power.
Chairman of the Technical Facilitation Team (TFT), Bishop Humper, said there is light at the end of the tunnel for the party if only stakeholders can agree follow the reconciliation project they have instituted.
He noted that the TFT has been formed as a neutral body to mend the cracks in the party.
Bishop Humper further revealed that the TFT has a three month project of dialoguing with interested party members and that a national dialogue conference will be held sometime in September this year.
He further disclosed that the TFT has budgeted a total sum of $56,000 to undertake its project successfully, adding that they need more funding. He commended the Campaign for Unity Team for donating $16,000 to the TFT.
The National Coordinator of the of the Campaign for Unity Team, Ibrahim Sannoh, gave a summary of the activities his organization has undertaken to ensure that peace prevails in the party.
He said their motto, “It is not about you, it is not about me, it is about the party” captures it all. He concluded by calling on all the party’s elders to put hands on deck to ensure that peace returns to the party.
