Parliament Ratifies UN Convention
The Sierra Leone Parliament has ratified the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime which was tabled before the House on Tuesday 20th May, 2014 by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ebu Jusu.
The bill was enacted on the 24th July, 2014, and on the same day, parliament also ratified the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty that was laid before the House by the Deputy Minister on the 25th September, 2013.
According to Madam Jusu, the two enacted bills will help reduce child trafficking and sexual exploitation, thereby restoring human dignity. “The Arms Treaty, especially, will help eradicate illicit fire arms which undermine state security,” she stated.

The World Council of Churches welcome the decision by the Parliament of Sierra Leone to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty. In particular we thank Hon Dr Lahai for working with WCC and Council of Churches of Sierra Leone to get the ATT ratified. We now call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to sign the instrument and deposit with the UN Secretary General as soon as possible.
Sierra Leone will be the 42nd state to ratify the treaty and we need 8 more state to have the treaty enter into force. When the ATT enters into force we believe lives will be saved.
