Sierra Leone judo fighter fails commonwealth games stage

…as Squash team contestants bow out

The 20th edition of the Commonwealth games on Tuesday 23rd July opens in Glasgow, Scotland with over four hundred athletes’ position to compete in this year’s games. The traditional game brings athletes from 70 commonwealth nations. Sierra Leone is competing in the games and made first appearance in the Squash court. Sierra Leone only Judo fighter Kelvin Lewis slated to fight on Thursday did not show up for his contest.  Reporter Mohamed Konneh is in Glasgow and now reports.

It was a disappointing start for Sierra Leone at the start of the commonwealth games in Glasgow. The country’s Judo fighter, Kelvin Lewis did not show up for his bout against lowly rated Jamie Macdonald of Wales making an automatic qualification for the Walsh man to the next stage.

Idrisa Massaquo is Sierra Leone Judo coach who accompanies Kelvin to the games.

The first day of competition was also a disappointing start for the tiny West African nation with two of its Squash players crashing out of the competition. Both Issa Kamara and James Fayia lost their first ever match at the 2014 commonwealth games. Issa was defeated by Paul Coll of New Zealand whilst Fayia was dumped by Joe Chapman of British Virgin Island.

Despite the poor start Sierra Leone participants to the game still have a chance to progress with Mohamed Sillah making the boxing ring this evening.  Sillah is Sierra Leone‘s hopeful at the moment very much ready to throw punches.

The Sierra Leone prolific boxer will face Australian born in the ring this evening and fans are hoping to witness a fascinating bout between the West African skill fighter and the man from the oceanic region.

Glasgow 2014 begins with a bang and the Scottish city is already boiling with funfair. The next ten days will be fascinating with various athletes hoping to clinch gold at this year’s commonwealth.
