Each year, The British Berlin School (BBS) in Germany awards students who have excelled in the classroom and beyond. But most importantly, the school has a specific annual award—The Japian Stevens Award. It was set up after the tragic death of a student, Japian Stevens, in his honour to recognise students who exhibit academic excellence.  (Photot: The Award Winner Flanked by Mr. and Mrs. Stevens)

Japian Stevens, the late son of Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany, H.E Jongopie S. Stevens died while swimming in a lake three years ago in Berlin.

This year’s award was given to Jakob Meinel for his outstanding performance in school.

Shortly before the announcement of the award, the head of the BBS, informed the school pupils about the Japian Stevens Educational Foundation, which was set up by Mr. and Mrs. Stevens in response to the needs of the underprivileged whose parents cannot afford to pay their school fees.

Mrs Stevens gave an overview of the Foundation and stressed on the positive impact it has created on those that are benefiting from the scholarship. She further thanked all those who have supported the Foundation in diverse ways and encouraged them to continue with such a spirit in an effort to help brighten the future of the underprivileged children in Sierra Leone.

Among the beneficiaries are Santigie Alpha and Ibrahim Turay, attending at the Modern High School and Apex International School in Freetown respectively. Their message to the BBS— one of the Foundation’s sponsors depicts a feeling of joy and appreciation to the Stevens family. The pupils regarded the Stevens family as their redeemer who have made it possible for them to pursue their educational career.

“The scholarship has played a great role in my life. My school fees is being paid and always on time despite the huge sum of money, text books and exercise books are also provided to me by the scholarship, and also miscellaneous cost are also paid for me by the scholarship such as my lunch,” said Santigie Alpha.
