Development: No Excuse for Third Term
Many proponents of third term for President Koroma have been basing their argument on the fact that the president has done a lot of development works for the country and, therefore, he should be given a third term to allow him bring more development into the country.
We view such argument as logically fallacious and not in line with modern democratic principles. What about Nelson Mandela who spent over two decades in prison to free his people from the notorious apartheid regime? Mandela would have called for life presidency if he was not the democratic and decent brand of African politician. In spite of the great sacrifice he made for his people, he ruled for only a term and handed over power gracefully.
Why can’t we encourage President Koroma to behave like Mandela and make an honorable exit so that his name will go down the annals of history as a model of democracy and a decent politician? Why do we want to sacrifice our hard won democracy on the altar of development?
It will be wise for the president to give chance to Sierra Leoneans to try another person after he will have ended his second term. Had we not tried the president, we would have never known that he was development-oriented.
President Koroma’s numerous and visible development works should not be an excuse for his prolonged stay in power and those tempting him to do so are his worst enemies who do not want the president to have a clean political record.
