Under Sengeh the Changing Face of Centennial Secondary School
What can be rightly described as a revolution is taking place at the Centennial Secondary School in Mattru Jong, Bonthe District. The genesis of the revolution was when aggrieved pupils of the school rioted and went on a sit down strike, demanding the eviction of the former principal, Alpha Amadu Barrie who they accused of bringing the school from hero to zero.
The pupils never went to school until Mr. Barrie was compelled by the board to relinquish the position.
Barrie’s administration was said to have led the school into a state of near collapse almost everything was bungled up. The pupils were failing public exams en masse and the school structures were crumbling after going without renovation for several years. Many experienced teachers had vacated the school as Mr. Barrie was specialized in discouraging teachers. Pupils were going without Identity Cards and report cards; in short, Barrie’s administration was characterized by high level corruption and recklessness.
But when I visited the school recently, I found out that the new principal, Sulaiman Sengeh, who succeeded the evicted Barrie, is bringing back the school to its former glory. The once nearly defunct library is now overflowing with modern books and the once permanently dark school campus is now boasting of electricity at night. The once dilapidated and stinky toilets have been made decent. Water facility is now present and the teachers and pupils are now comfortable and happy.
Sengeh is a classical example of a development oriented principal whose example others should emulate.
