For illicit operation Parliament closes two international NGOs in Sierra Leone
The Parliamentary Special Committee on International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) has ordered the closure of two INGOs which have been illegally operating in the country.
The committee took the decision on Monday, June 30th this year during a meeting with the INGOs in the committee room in the House of Parliament, Tower Hill, Freetown.
The two shut INGOs are, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) and Make It Happen. The committee found both organizations guilty of violating the rules and regulations governing the operations of INGOs in the country.
Parliament found out that the two INGOs have been operating in the country without registration certificates, licenses, and other documents that permit them to operate in the country.
The Committee Chairman, Hon. Claude Kamanda of constituency 095 in the Western Rural District, stressed that the two banned INGOs can only resume operation after going through proper registration and obtaining necessary certificates and licenses.
In a related development, another NGO, Kambia Appeal, was found to be involved in massive corrupt practices ranging from misuse of donor funds, lack of transparency and accountability to lack of registration certificates and other forms of documentation,
The committee has decided to refer the case of Kambia Appeal to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) due to its gravity.
