Torrential Rain Causes Catastrophe

In Sierra Leone, it has become a tradition for heavy rains to cause calamities during every rainy season. Sweeping floods and storms destroy lives and properties.

As the rainy season is about to reach its apogee, rain disasters have begun once more. On Wednesday, 2nd July this year, torrential rain flood swept through the residence of one Madam Thelma Barnette at Spur road in Freetown.

Recounting her ordeal to Sierra Express, the flood victim, Madam Barnette, in an interview, said the sweeping flood bulldozed its way through her steel gate and overtook her house, destroying her generator, eight bags of rice, nine bags of sugar, computer, plasma television and drinks.

The heavy downpour of rain in the early hours of Wednesday Morning 2nd July 2014 destroyed properties worth millions of Leones at Spur road leading to Freetown road Lumley.

She further narrated that the torrential rain flood overran the residence of a Lebanese called Basma and destroyed his Lexus jeep.

Madam blamed the rain flood disaster on the poor drainage system in the city, calling on government to improve on the drainages to prevent them from overflowing and wrecking havoc whenever it rains heavily.
