Latter Days Saints assist Quarry Community

Freetown, June 10 (SLENA) – Member of Parliament for constituency 101, Abdul Salam Kanu has told Wash Media Network that the Quarry community in the east end of Freetown is now enjoying safe drinking water supply following help from the Latter Days Saint Church.

Christian Aid, he went on, also gave the community a bore hole water well to the hospital which was commissioned a month ago. The community, he said, has water committee because the project belongs to them and there should be community driven projects.

Hon. Kanu said with the help of the Utility Chairman, they have identified water sources across the city from Levuma to Orugu and they are looking forward to some NGOs to develop spring box in the Looking Town, Thunder Hill, Lumley and Malama communities.

“Accidents were happening before because people from the quarry end have to come to the other end to fetch water but with the new water provision, accidents have minimized.

On the sanitation aspect, the MP said the hospital, Dock yard and Fisheries now have toilets and a lorry park, adding that through CONCERN Worldwide support they have benefitted from toilets.

Hon. Kanu said before now people were using the slum areas as toilet place which is not hygienic. He added that the inhabitants in the area would be having a health hour program on radio to sensitize people about water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) and they are trying to bring implementers and stakeholders to identify problems and bring them to light.
