Maada and Fatima Bio to launch foundation to help children, women and youths

The former Head of State of the Republic of Sierra Leone and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio are to launch a Foundation to provide assistance and various support to children, women and youths on Saturday, May 31st 2014, at the African Community Centre London, Unit 2 Lyndean Industrial Estate, Felixstowe Road, Abbeywood, SE2 9SG.

Speaking about the foundation, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio said that the launching of this Foundation is part of his belief that as citizens we all have a duty to one another, where we can, to provide assistance to children, women and young people who are faced with many challenges in our communities and society at large. He went on that there are many well-meaning Sierra Leoneans living at home and abroad who do many remarkable things in helping children, women, young people and communities. He continued that those generous Sierra Leoneans who provide various forms of support to help others we should recognise their good works and be grateful to them as a country.

“This Foundation is not about politics rather it is just part of our civic responsibility as citizens to ensure we provide a conveyance through which children, women, youths and communities will be supported by various interventions”, Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio added.

Also, speaking about the key objectives of the Foundation, Mrs. Fatima Jabbe Maada Bio said that among other things the Foundation will have four key objectives namely:

  • Providing subsidies towards educational schemes for children from disadvantaged background;
  • Supporting the provision of access to skills training and enterprise development programs for deprived women and youths;
  • Assisting with the provision of basic healthcare services in needy communities; and
  • Supporting rural community agricultural development programs.

The launching of the foundation is expected to be honoured by many Sierra Leoneans in the United Kingdom, Europe and other parts of the world. Also, guests of other foreign nationals, the international press, politicians and diplomats will be expected to grace the launching of the Foundation which will be climaxed with a banquet.

Ticket cost for the launching of the foundation and banquet is £60 and all donations and fundraising will go towards achieving the objectives of the foundation which is geared towards helping children, women and young people in the areas of education, health care, skills training and enterprise development and agricultural development.

Also, during the launching and banquet, there will be performances from various artists from Sierra Leone, Ghana and Cameroon whilst the MC for the occasion will be UK based Sierra Leonean stand-up comedy genius, H.E Tommy Massaquoi.

It should be noted that the launching of a foundation to help people from disadvantage backgrounds through various initiatives by former heads of state is not a new phenomenon.  In February last year,  former President Olusegun Obasanjo launched his Foundation in London which is geared towards supporting youth empowerment initiative, girl child initiative, health initiative among other things. However, for the Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio, this foundation launching and banquet will be very special because it will also coincide with his 50th birthday this May.
