Shooting Stars battle Petit Syli National on Friday 25th April
Sierra Leone’s Under-20 squad, Shooting Stars will clash with their Guinean counterpart, Petit Syli National in Conakry on Friday April 25, in an encounter that could best be described as ‘deadly’.
The fixture is the preliminaries of the Africa Youth Championship, which will be hosted in Dakar, Senegal next year and the winner of this encounter, will play Ghana in the next round.
Sierra Leone defeated the Syli National juniors 1-0 in the first leg played in Makeni on April 5th 2014 and it was FC Johansen’s Sorie Barrie, who accounted for the goal after a defensive poor play by the Guinean central defenders.
The 39-man delegation which left Freetown on Wednesday evening arrived in Conakry in the early hours of Thursday and was escorted to their hotel in Conakry some 1000km from the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry, Guinea.
Speaking on the phone shortly after their training session in Conakry on Thursday afternoon, Coach Charlie Wright expressed optimism on progression to the next stage. He says the boys are in high spirit, well motivated and focused on the challenges ahead.
“We are confident that the result will favour us to the next stage despite the fact that the Guineans have strengthened their squad for this encounter. We are here on a mission and we must accomplish it,” Coach Wright assured.
A draw for Shooting Stars will see them progress to the next stage wherein they will meet the Under-20 squad of Ghana in May and Sierra Leone will host the first leg.
