President Koroma launches blueprint for Youth Development
President Ernest Bai Koroma on Tuesday 15th April, 2014 launched the blueprint document for youth development at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi building, Freetown.
The Presidential Youth Aid to the President, Bai Mamoud Bangura, who also doubled as Chairman of the programme, in his opening remarks hailed President Koroma for his relentless effort in bringing the youths closer to his Government, adding that the word youth had been the most commonly word used but nowadays youth empowerment is a better manifestation to the development of Sierra Leone.
In his presentation Dr. Dennis Sandy highlighted issues affecting the youths like under representation, low self esteem , difficulty to access education and other facilities, including the synopsis which is based on three priority challenges, decent jobs, active young citizens, and more education for youths. The Minister of Youth Affairs, Hon. Alimamy Kamara, commended President Koroma for his hard work adding that the President in his wisdom had created the National Youth Commission which is partnering with the Youth Affairs Ministry and also expressed his appreciation to the funding partners like UNDP for their effort in bringing the youth to a sense of national development.
The President in his keynote address during the launching said that the document is a blueprint for the development of our country noting that if the youths of this country ‘say yes to you’ then who can say no to you. “It was the youths that brought peace to this country and therefore it is our responsibility to develop this document so as to do more in ensuring that the youths are empowered with skilled training so as to gainfully employ them,” said President Koroma.
President Koroma agreed that though there are challenges his Government is enhancing Agricultural production with a 500 acres National Farm Scheme for every district and every farm will have a recreational facility, health center, etc.
The challenges are sometimes based on more youths need to be trained and people should start to acknowledge the youths therefore we must learn to motivate the youths. He emphasized on female youths therefore we should include the female youths in the national youth programmes.
Representing the youths Mr. Alphonso Manley said that the President had been directed by the Almighty God to choose Alimamy Kamara as Minister of Youth Affairs and a vibrant man to push youth activities forward.
