Guma Water Company Arrests 11 Defaulters
BA team of Guma Valley Water Company personnel and police officers on Sunday 14th March 2010 arrested eleven defaulters, who were busy disconnecting and stealing water from Guma pipes.
The head of Guma officials, Public Relations Officer, Joseph Musa informed pressmen that their information Unit had been engaged in sensitizing customers through the mass media before the operation of raiding and arresting culprits got underway.
Mr. Musa stated that the operation targets illegal persons, who interfere with Guma installations and also revealed that the initiative was born out of a desire to curb all anti social practices pertaining to Guma pipes in the city.
Guma, he explained, spends huge sums of money to purify water, but detractors deprive the company from acquiring much-needed revenue. “We have constructed well over 132 streets taps in Freetown to address the needs of other customers, who can’t afford private taps in their homes and the taps are now operating full swing.Â
Our efforts to eradicate illegal connections are carried out in line with Section 57 of Guma statutory regulations. I am advising all those who are engaged in this malpractice to desist now or face the wrath of the law, which stipulates 6-10 years imprisonment for guilty culprits.
Joseph Koroma, Kemoh Lee, Bailor Bah Ibrahim Barrie, and Abdul Conteh were caught red handed in the act of pilfering Guma water at Juba Hill, Pipeline, Lumley. Issa Samura, Alie Fornah and some toddlers were caught on the height stealing water from Guma connections along Regent Road and Sheriff Drive in Lumley.
The defaulters were later whisked to the Lumley Police Station and those who are of age will be charged to court and others below the prosecution age bracket are expected to be released after Police had obtained statements from them. Thirty containers and motor bike, which was been washed with the illegal Guma water were confiscated during the raids. According to Guma Information Officer the operation would be extended to other areas in the capital, after massive sensitization had been undertaken.
