Education is key for Disabled Employment-Penfold Speaks
Komrabai Peter Penfold (in photo); former British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, has said in Freetown that employment for the disabled can only be achieved through education; a situation he added if achieved will invariably help to improve the lot of people with disabilities.
Speaking to journalists in Freetown while explaining the nature of scholarships won by three students living with disability, Mr. Penfold stressed the need for equal opportunity for the disabled as they he said form an integral part of general societal development.
The scholarships according to him were awarded by The Dorothy Springer Trust in the United Kingdom, a Trust the former Envoy revealed is very much committed to helping disadvantaged people. He noted that the scholarship scheme, which was equivalent to sixty million Leones, was aimed at providing advanced computer skills for persons with disabilities.
Komrabai Penfold argued that educating persons with disabilities would help them in accessing jobs. He said the scholarship would allow the beneficiaries to go through seven months intensive courses in computer technology.
Honourable Julius Nye Cuffie a disabled rights activist and Member of Parliament said the concept of disability hinges on the foundation of independent living noting that the scholarships would enable the beneficiaries to become self reliant and contribute to national development.
