Anti Corruption Commission schools pupils in the South
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) District Coordinator, Bonthe, Mr. Joseph Hazeley, has engaged school pupils to sensitize them on the fight against corruption in the Bonthe and Bo districts respectively in the South of the country.
In a bid to tackle the high spate of corruption engulfing schools in the country most especially schools in his area of responsibilities, he said he has decided on engaging pupils on diverse dates to tell them their role in society.
Speaking to this Reporter, he noted that the rate at which Teachers are making illegal charges involved in other school related corrupt offences is alarming, especially in the provincial areas which he says frustrates the attainment if quality education in the country.
He also explained that the awareness raising exercises for pupils in main land Bonthe and Sumbuya in Bo are borne from the slogan, “Catch them young so that tomorrow they can be corrupt free.“
He also explained that the drive is also aimed at capacitating pupils to expose corrupt practices in schools as a duty.
Addressing the Principals and Teachers during the campaign, Me. Hazeley warned them to desist from their regular exercise of coercing pupils to pay monies for them to mark assignments, test and examination scripts.
He said the preparation and sale of pamphlets, extra lesson charges, payment for collecting report cards including the NPSC, BECE and WASSE results, are all illegal and exploitative and warned Teachers to stop such practices, stressing that if they are caught in such practices they will face the full force of the law.
He also condemned illegal admissions, underserved promotions, falsification of results, and examination malpractice, which he said are all responsible for the falling educational standards in the country.
He stated that these offences are punishable for which each count is a fine not less than thirty million Leones or three years imprisonment.
He intimated that the ACC will not hesitate to investigate and prosecute corrupt Principals and Teachers.
He recalled that a Teacher was indicted for collecting five thousand Leones from a pupil and was found guilty and currently in prison.
He concluded by providing a hotline to the pupils to report any illegal or corrupt activities to them.
