WACSI trains CSOs to influence policies in Liberia
Accra, Ghana – 27 civil society actors from 20 civil society organisations (CSOs) in Liberia have been equipped to form alliances and effectively advocate for social justice. They benefitted from six days of intensive, practical and context-specific training delivered by the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) – a leading capacity building hub for CSOs in West Africa. The training took place at Corina Hotel, Monrovia from 27 January to February 1, 2014.
The training was organised by the National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL) with support from USAID and the International Federation for Electoral Systems (IFES).
The six day training empowered participants with skills in the areas of Training and Facilitation, Introduction to Policy Advocacy and Networking and Alliance Building. These courses were designed and delivered to enable the leadership of CSOs in the country to acquire robust skills to collaborate and effectively engage in shaping policies that would improve the lives of Liberians.
Participants gained a broad range of new and relevant skills that would improve their collaboration with members in networks, engagement in policy influencing processes and community mobilisation in their respective districts and counties in the country.
According to Ms. Martha Flanjay Karnga, Executive Director of Bassa Women Development Association (BAWODA), knowledge gained from this training “will enable BAWODA to be more proactive in promoting the rights of children, youth, women and children”.
Mr. Christopher Wleh, Secretary General of NCSCL said he has acquired new skills from the training. He specifically pointed out that, “I’ll be using the new skills to better coordinate the members of the Council for enhanced networking and collaboration among members”.
After the training, participants demonstrated an excellent mastery of the key advocacy concepts, strategies to build and consolidate functional networks and how to replicate the knowledge to their colleagues and partners. This was enhanced by open discussions that were described as “interactive, engaging and participatory” by Mr. Sieh Nyandeh, Executive Director of Friends of Frabanie International (FOFI).
Participants commended the facilitators of the training Ms. Angela Dwamena-Boakye, Executive Director of Ark Foundation, Ghana and Ms. Omolara Balogun, Policy Advocacy Officer of WACSI. The facilitators shared inspiring and innovative ideas.
