Kabala Secondary School celebrates 53rd Anniversary
Kabala, Nov 21, 3013 – Kabala Secondary School (KSS) celebrated its 53rd Anniversary in grand style last week. The event took place at the Kabala Central Roundabout in Kabala, Koinadugu District.
The Principal of the Catholic School, Father H.B. Conteh welcomed the Guest Speaker, Mr. Momoh Konte, a KSS Old Boy, businessman and a quiet philanthropist, who delivered a fine speech documenting the history of the school and its morals.
Mr. Momoh Konte brought to the attention of all the decline in the infrastructure of the school, stating, “The dream of the founding fathers has lived on but the realization of their dream is far from being achieved.” He lamented the lack of funds to attract the right level of qualified teachers and thanked the current teachers for their dedication in doing their job under unfulfilling circumstances.
He beseeched the alumni of the school to give back to their community and to “act as role models for the kids and our brothers and sisters in KSS.”
Speaking generally, he expressed the need to fight to eradicate poverty in Koinadugu and to close the gap between the rich and the poor and to look after the less fortunate. He stressed, “We are all equal in the eyes of God, thus we must learn to treat one another that way.”
The high point of his speech was when from his own pocket he made a cash donation of Le30 million to the school.
He explained the need to provide the tools for the school, particularly a Science Laboratory as a necessity to produce the country’s future Engineers, Doctors, and Scientists.
Addressing his fellow KSS alumni “to rise to the challenge and change the status quo,” Mr. Momoh Konte pledged to rehabilitate the structure serving as the Science Laboratory to a sound and workable level and asked for support in the provision of the necessary equipment for the laboratory.
Mr. Konte further addressed the meeting with the great news that he is presently building a four-classroom block for the school complete with a staff room. The current projected capacity of the school is around 450 students and Konte promised to help equip the school with 120 sets of school furniture, saying the structure will bear the name of Owen Jones, ‘a long time teacher at KSS who left the comfort of Freetown to come to this poor district and helped shape all of us and above all our district.”
He also stated that in recognition of Mr. Owen Jones and another brother, Mr. Dominic Sogbo Mansaray, that the Konte family has established two scholarship funds to the tune of Le15 million with the hope that the alumni will help sustain the funds. For the sake of transparency, the Catholic Mission shall provide administrative cover for the funds.
The Head Girl, in her vote of thanks, rendered countless appreciation to Mr. Momoh Konte for his kind gifts to not only KSS but to the people of Kabala and the district as a whole. She prayed that great people from this blessed district follow the good example of Mr. Konte and, “make the district the most beautiful place on earth.”
Speaking to some of the old boys who went to school with Momoh Konte, they confessed that this was not new to them as sharing has always been in Konte’s nature, even when he was a pupil at KSS.
Speaking to the Principal, he said the name Momoh Konte is a household name, not only in Koinadugu district, but throughout the country as a whole. He is known for his kind gestures all over the country and as an individual he feels the pain of the underprivileged.
Mr. Momoh Konte told this reporter that he has built a Court Barray at Mansadou, Mango Chiefdom and rehabilitated the Court Barray at Kurubola – Neya Chiefdom. He has also built schools at Faradugu, Sengbe Chiefdom, Heremakono, Wara Wara Yegale Chiefdom, Bafodia, Wara Wara Bafodia Chiefdom and plans to build another school at KSS in Kabala town.
