“We desire genuine partnership” says Amir of Kuwait

The Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has on November 19 said on the occasion of the official opening of the 3rd Africa-Arab Summit at the Banyan Palace in Kuwait that the Summit is being held in view of the continued politically critical and economically unstable conditions, that require both regions to keep working and intensifying efforts to confront them, thus sparing Africa-Arab countries and economies the consequences of such conditions.

He noted that the theme of this year’s Summit (Partners in Development & Investment) was jealously selected to reflect their awareness of the significance of economic cooperation, representing as it does the basis of common interests, for which they proceed to fulfill the strategic partnership they seek. “In this theme, we reiterate also our interest in dedicating the greater part of our agenda to economic and development aspects, thus reflecting a profound understanding of the requirements of the next phase, and perception of the appropriate mechanism for that purpose”, said His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The Amir called for genuine partnership that draws from the principle of reciprocity among everyone, saying “we are all required to devise the guidelines for our future work that shall be based on a concept of genuine partnership”. He also observed that the political challenges facing both Arab and African states are numerous and manifold, and therefore the Summit is not the right place to address them. Any attempt to discuss such issues, he said, will hamper the ability of the forum to focus on the economic issues, and the joint action needed to address them.

“The sustainable development we desire is the optimal exploitation of the resources and fortunes that Allah bestowed upon us without waste, through which we join forces to invest our resources in projects that consolidate our integration”, said the Amir of Kuwait, adding that God has bestowed upon both regions arable land, skilled workers, raw materials, and wealth that can be invested to achieve food security, which has become a dire need in view of unstable global conditions as well as an affected economy that still reels from the consequences of a global economic crisis that have swept all economies of the world without exception, leaving many states suffering from a regression in their rates of growth and prosperity.
