Minister launches Devolution Task Force

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Finda Diana Konomanyi Kabba, on Wednesday, October 30 this year, at the conference hall of the Freetown City Council in Freetown, launched the Devolution Task Force.

Addressing the gathering she said that she was very happy to be with them and called on all Ministries, Departments and Agencies who want to devolve functions to consider doing so now as Councils are now running most of the institutions that were previously run directly by the central Government.

She explained that President Ernest Bai Koroma was not very pleased with some Ministries, Departments and Agencies who don’t want to devolve functions.

She paid tribute to the Deputy Minister of Health I, Dr. Fofannah for his Ministry not to take away our functions and for them to treat the devolution process with seriousness. She indicated that the launching today was the best that will happen under her reign as the World Bank, nongovernmental organizations and the people of this country want the devolution to process succeed.

The Minister maintained that the country is progressing impressively in the decentralization process.

She warned that she will definitely not encourage any Civil Servant who would not want to comply with the devolution process as the support from the Central Government was very crucial to the success of the Local Councils.

She urged the devolution team not to fail as their failure will impact very negatively on the successes the country is scoring daily.

In his comments, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. K.O. Bah, disclosed that some Ministries, departments and Agencies don’t want to devolve functions because they want to control all the power and funds.

He stressed that there was no way anyone can stop this process anymore.

In his contribution, the Director of Decentralization, Mr. Alhassan Kanu said he was very happy to welcome the members of the Devolution Task Force and to wish them well in their work.

In his remarks, the Deputy Minister I, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Fofannah, noted that decentralization has its own problems but that they will work with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to make it succeed.

The Devolution Task Force team includes Mr. Charles Mambu, Chairman; Mr. Festus Minah, Vice Chairman; Mr. Alhassan Kanu, Mr. Munir, Hon. Koroma, Mr. Nuru Deen, Mr. Alpha U. Jalloh, Ms. Yabom T. Koroma, Mr.  John Brima, Mr. Techman Kanu, Mr. Alisson Sunderland, Mr. Pious Bockarie, and Mr. Mohammed R. Koroma.
