SLPPNA gains regional status at the recently concluded SLPP convention in Bo

Bo town turned green when the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) met from Friday February 26 to Sunday February 28, 2010 to resolve confusion within the 2009 constitution and to decide on a date for the election of the Flag bearer.

In a telephone conversation with Dr. Patrick K. Muana in Bo, he picturesquely highlighted the events of the three day convention:

“The conference was extended to Sunday to resolve outstanding issues relevant to the constitution. Following stern advice from Peter Tucker, former SLPP Chairman, there was consensus that the 2009 constitution is cumbersomely inadequate to be considered at this moment and that the party’s legal team must continue working on it. The conference resolved therefore that the 1995 constitution must be looked at with a view to building and enhancing amendments which can be operational via the PPRC within a shorter order”.

  1. NEC members are eligible for flagbearership if they resign 6 months before the convention to elect the Flag Bearer.
  2. SLPP Chairman – Leader of the Party.
  3. SLPP NA – 1 delegate per every 50 certified and paid up member.
  4. Regional Executives – Young Generation and Women’s Leader to vote.
  5. District Executives now part of Regional Executive
  6. Councilors per every SLPP controlled council and non-controlled councils – 2 in non-controlled councils including the chairman and at least 1 woman (gender mainstreaming)
  7. Council of elders – 1 delegate per region
  8. Students in tertiary institutions – 1 delegate per institution with a functional SLPP chapter.

The rules and regulations for the Flag bearer were also considered.
