SLPP wants Mohamed Cotor Kamara for President in 2017 in Sierra Leone
Some supporters and members of the Reconciliation Committee of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in the Southern, Eastern and the Northern Provinces of Sierra Leone, have called for Sierra Leoneans in the country and those in the Diaspora to allow Mr. Mohamed Cotor Kamara to come home and be the Presidential candidate for the party to the 2017 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The call was made during a recent meeting held in Gbawubu town in the Bo District by some members of the Reconciliation Committee after the recent SLPP convention held in Bo.
The Reconciliation Committee was set up by the SLPP National Executive to settle the cracks in the party suffered after the Local Council Election in 2004 which brought the All People Congress (APC) Mayor Herbert George Williams to power.
Reports reaching this medium have stated that the pivotal role played by Mr. Mohamed Cotor Kamara during the Reconciliation Committee meetings when the party lost to the APC in the Local Council elections prompted the Committee to seek his direction.
Mr. Kamara is also reported to have held successive meetings in strategic areas with party members in Freetown and in the provinces, citing the biggest ever meeting held at the National Stadium in the West of Freetown which was graced by the then Vice President Solomon Ekuma Berewa and former Secretary General, Dr. Prince Harding.
The source also explained that the meeting was designed to rekindle the spirits of the aggrieved members of the party as well as to beseech them to love the party and vote for it in the next elections.
Vice President Solomon Ekuma Berewa was also reported to have commended Mr. Kamara for sensitizing members of the party about the party’s legacies and the need for the party to uphold the tenets of democracy.
It can be recalled that Mr. Mohamed Cotor Kamara aspired for the party’s flag bearer position and lost in 2005 but that did not discourage him from active politics within the party.
A member of the inner core of the party disclosed to this paper that as former SLPP Chairman in the United States of America, Mr. Kamara made numerous contributions to party. He also stated that during the war Mr. Kamara mobilised and facilitated food and medical services for the people of this country.
In a telephone interview from America, Mr. Mohamed Cotor Kamara stated that he did not declare for any position in the just concluded convention in Bo, maintaining that it was a cross section of SLPP supporters who during the meeting demanded for him to come home and lead the party.
He said although he did not win the flag bearer position in 2005, that did not dampen his spirits from taking an active part in the activities of the party, but instead he has continued to work hard to ensure that the party gains power come 2017.
