World Vision donates 16 motorbikes and certifies 185 Primary School Teachers

In a bid to promote quality education in primary schools across the country World Vision Sierra Leone has completed a one month intensive In-service training for185 primary school at N’jala Campus in Bo and also donated 16 motorbikes to the Ministry of Education for supervision of schools.   (Photo: World Vision Sierra Leone Education and Innovation Manager Alfred Moses Kamara making a statement during certification ceremony of 185 primary school teachers)

The objective of the In-service training is to provide primary school teachers in mostly remote and underdeveloped communities with new techniques of teaching through the child centered teaching techniques for core subjects like Mathematics, Language Arts, Integrated Science and Social Studies amongst others.

The chairman of the ceremony Deen School of Education at N’jala University Bo Campus Dr. Joseph B A Kandeh said one cannot build a nation without building the capacity of the people which rests solely on teachers.

He said the participants are newly trained and qualified teachers that are expected to improve the educational standards in their respective communities.

Speaking at the certification ceremony the course coordinator Dr. Samuel Munda Benya Senesie said participants should express delight over the teaching profession and commended World Vision’s approach towards the empowerment of primary school teachers for quality education.

Speaking at the handing over of motor bikes and certification ceremony Alfred Moses Kamara World Vision Sierra Leone Education and Innovation Manager said the participants for the in-service training were carefully selected from the organizations Area Development Programmes in Bo, Bonthe, Pujehun and Kono.

He said the In-service training aims to enhance teachers teaching methods in primary schools and to provide intellectual growth, professional responsibility for an improved educational system for the children.

He encouraged the trained teachers to implement knowledge gained during the In-service training for the improvement of education in their respective communities.

Alfred Moses Kamara urged local authorities and Education Ministry officials to monitor the performance of the trained teachers as many other teachers are also expected to benefit from the World Vision In-service training for primary school teachers for quality education in schools.

Alfred Kamara said by next year “we are targeting 250 participants so as to ensure more teachers in remote areas benefit from the training so as to complementing the government development agenda in achieving quality education for all.

The National Director of World Vision Sierra Leone Leslie Atonikeh Scott said the participants are the first set of trainees supported by World Vision in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology and other educational sectors.

He said in the past World Vision have constructed and furnished many schools across the country but his organizations new focus and approach is geared towards empowering teachers for quality education delivery in primary schools so as to ensure children starting reading and writing by age eleven.

The National Director of World Vision also said that, they will be providing teaching and learning materials to all the schools that benefited from the training and that a proper monitoring and supervision of the schools will be introduced for effective delivery.

He also added that World Vision Sierra Leone have also provided sixteen motorbikes to the Minister of Education to be used by supervisors and inspectors of schools in Bo, Bonthe, Pujehun and Kailahun.

He commended N’jala University for facilitating the training and for also hosting the In-service training at the college campus for a period of one month.

He said the foundermental objective of the training is not to provide economic benefits but to build the human resource capacity of teachers so that, they can deliver quality education in their respective primary schools.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of N’jala University Bo Campus Professor Patrick Joseph Square commended World Vision for the collaboration and said the participants were very corporative and shared their various experiences during the training and calls for the improvement of N’jala Campus in Bo infrastructures and provision of pipe –born water.

 The Paramount Chief of Gallines Peri Chiefdom Alhaji Kamara Koroma and the Paramount Chief of Tikonko Chiefdom Joe Kangbai Mackavoray said the training is a catalyst for quality education in rural communities for the future development of the country and commended World Vision for focusing on child development through support to education health and sanitation.

Mary Lavalie one of the participants expressed profound thanks and appreciation to World Vision for providing the training support and lecturers of N’jala University for facilitating the training and assured stakeholders that knowledge gained will be used to advance education in their respective communities for improvement of results.

The Chief Education Officer South John Amara Swarray expressed profound thanks and appreciation to World Vision for complementing government efforts in providing quality education for the future leaders of the country.  He encouraged the participants to ensure that knowledge gained during the training should change their teaching approach and methods to enable them deliver quality education in schools.

Distribution of certificates to the 185 participants of the In-service training and handing over the sixteen motorbikes formed a high point of the ceremony.
