At a well-organised ceremony witnessed by staff of the High Commission and members of the Madam Yoko Entertainment Company who accompanied Kargbo to the mission, High Commissioner said he was very happy to receive Kargbo and her team at the mission.
High Commissioner commended Kargbo for promoting the image of Sierra Leone in the international world and described her as an ambassador for Sierra Leone.
“You are an ambassador for Sierra Leone more than me because I am limited to just few countries while you are ambassador for the whole world because what you are doing is taking Sierra Leone right across the entire world,†Turay said adding, “we are very proud of you.â€
He appealed to Mariatu to continue to project the image of Sierra Leone more especially boosting the country’s tourism potential.
HE Turay then extended an invitation to travel along with Miss Sierra Leone during his presentation of credentials so that she will seize the opportunity to boost the tourism potentials in Sierra Leone.
Responding, Miss Sierra Leone expressed her delight and appreciation towards the reception given her by staff of the mission especially at a very short notice.
She explained her road to success which includes her rough path during her childhood days to her rise to stardom – breaking a world record of becoming the first person in the history of that competition to ever win the Talent and Fashion shows respectively at the same time.
Mariatu thanked her promoters Mammy Yoko more especially the group leader Cidar Mansaray whom she described as a very remarkable person and ‘the brain’ behind her success.
She expressed her determination in boosting the image of Sierra Leone in the international world and disclosed about her encounter with Sierra Leone’s First Lady Sia Koroma in China.
The First Lady was in China on the invitation of the Chinese Government when her attention was drawn by the government and the media about a prominent Sierra Leonean making the mark in the Asian continent in the person of Mariatu Kargbo.
Kargbo said she was very busy helping victims of the China earthquake when the First Lady arrived in China, but later squeezed her way and met with her.
She said she was impressed with the encouragement she had from the First Lady.
It could be recalled that Mariatu had spent some of the proceeds she acquired from shows to help the poor and needy in Sierra Leone.
In 2006, she launched an album titled: Mama Africa which was highly successful – proceeds of which she used to provide food for handicaps at Jui in the outskirt of Sierra Leone.
“Since then I have been taking care of those handicap on a monthly basis,†Mariatu said.
Earlier, Florence Bangali Head of Chancery at the Sierra Leone High Commission, introduced members of staff – but that was after welcoming Miss Sierra Leone and her team of promoters.
Bangali said as Sierra Leoneans, they feel proud and honoured to have no less a person than a Sierra Leonean as Miss Sierra Leone in their midst and pledged her mission’s support at all times.Sorie Sudan Sesay, Information Attache, Sierra Leone High Commission, UK/NI
