SLPPNA elects delegates for the SLPP convention in Bo, Sierra Leone

The air was tense as the Party Conference from 9 chapters clogged the airwaves, through a teleconference to vote their candidates of choice for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) convention in Bo in Sierra Leone.  The Acting Party Conference Chair, Mr. Solomon Gembeh, one time Assistant District Officer (ADO) in Pujehun, sternly laid down the ground rules. He then handed over to the Electoral Commissioners, Mr. Mohamed Bangura, Chairman for the New York Chapter, Mrs. Miatta Smith Treasurer, Georgia Chapter, and Dr. Tamba Tugbawa of the Northern California Chapter.

After careful deliberations and some housekeeping issues raised by Mr. Victor Alimamy, Chairman of the Boston Chapter, and some constitutional interpretations by the Legal Adviser Mr. Jaiah KaiKai, the voting started at approximately 10:30 PM EST, by email and telephone. Both the Electoral Commissioner and the Acting Party Conference Chair compared notes and the results were announced.

Dr. Patrick Muana                    – 21 Votes
Ambassador John Leigh          – 16 Votes
Ms. Isata Sowa                        – 9 Votes
Mr. Fofie Baimba                     – 1 Vote
Mr. Abu-Hassan Koroma         – 0 Vote
Mr. Vandy Moi Amara-Gbelu   – 0 Vote

Dr. Patrick K. Muana, Spokesman for SLPPNA Chairman, Mr. Augustine Fallay and Ambassador John Leigh won the highest number of votes and they will be representing the Sierra Leone People’s Party in North America (SLPPNA) as delegates at the SLPP convention in Bo, Sierra Leone.

What amazed everyone is the zero vote for Mr. Askia Abu- Hassan Koroma, Chairman for the Washington, DC chapter, who had promised to raise $1.5 million for the Party. None of the party conference delegates from his chapter voted for him. Mr. Koroma is already in Freetown presenting himself to dignitaries of the party as a delegate from the region.

Paramount on everyone’s mind and anxiously waiting is how the Party in Freetown/Sierra Leone is going to receive the SLPPNA’s message and allow those in the Diaspora to fully participate in the running of the Party in Sierra Leone.

For the last couple of weeks, there have been very serious arguments among members that all delegates representing the Sierra Leone People’s Party in North America (SLPPNA) should be voted for. The Chairman of the SLPPNA, Mr. Augustine Fallay adhered to the call to democracy, transparency and accountability and agreed that the Party Conference choose the delegates. The historic date February 21, 2010 brought the Party Conference together under the watchful eyes of Commissioner Nyalley.
