ACC boss talks tough
The Commissioner of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has, in his presentation titled, “Making corruption a high risk and low profit venture,” disclosed the new approach they are about adopting in their relentless fight against corruption in the country.
Mr. Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara made this disclosure at a two day training workshop for the Parliamentary Press Gallery with the theme, “Reporting corruption and the ACC activities,” organized by the Public Education and Outreach Department of the Commission.
He explained that they would institute physical and economic policies that involve the seizure of assets, freezing of bank accounts and travel ban on anyone found culpable of indulging in corrupt practices.
He also stated that the new direction in fighting corruption would serve as a deterrent in a bid to discourage corrupt activities in the country.
He revealed that they were very frustrated and disappointed with jubilations in Court when convicted individuals get light sentences, a situation he described as unfortunate.
He said they face daunting challenges in their battle against the scourge in a country where there is abject poverty. He pledged his institution’s commitment to ensuring that the Agenda for prosperity does not prosper a few people but prospers every Sierra Leonean.
The ACC boss reiterated that the capacity building workshop was meant for media practitioners assigned to Parliament to enable them have a better understanding in reporting issues of corruption and the activities of the Commission.
Mr. Kamara acknowledged the significant contributions of the media in the fight against corruption in the country, noting that the rationale of the training workshop was in line with the dictates of the ACC Act of 2008 to educate the masses on the fight against corruption and the benefits that are derived from such education.
