Two die at House of Jesus for the Disabled in Sierra Leone

The House of Jesus for the Disabled at Wallace Johnson Street, Freetown is reported to have become a death trap for the physically challenged people.  Latest report reveals that a six month old baby and a nine month old baby have died of cold in the house where the disabled are said to be living under appalling and hazardous conditions.  (Photo: Malnouriushed Abu Bakarr Kamara)

According to the Chairlady of House of Jesus for the Disabled, Kadija Kamara, another two passed away in April this year and nothing has been done to save the others who keep occupying dilapidated makeshift structures that leak like sieves, exposing the disabled to rain and the biting cold.

Kadija noted that she cannot do anything to rescue the disabled from their present predicament  noting that some of the kids are in dire need of medical attention, citing a malnourished child, Abu Bakarr Kamara as a vivid example.  Kadija informed that Abu Bakarr Kamara’s disabled father recently died leaving the malnourished baby in care of the organization.

“Our main challenge is housing but the land allocated to us in Grafton has been grabbed from us and nothing has been done  to get us that land”, said  physically challenged Kadija.

The land issue , she concluded, is a factor responsible for their current deplorable living as if they had land, an organization called, Handsworth International Mission Services would have built a skills training centre for them to improve their lot.
