Sierra Leone Polytechnics in Disunity – Lecturers Betray Lecturers
The polytechnics and teacher training colleges in Sierra Leone seem to be in disunity as evidenced by the decision of other polytechnics to boycott the recent strike action for regularization of conditions of service for lecturers.
The Milton Margai College of Education and Technology, (MMCET), the Northern Polytechnic in Makeni, the Eastern Polytechnic in Kenema, the Port Loko Teachers College and the Freetown Teachers College started the strike united but along the line, the other four polytechnics and training colleges are reported to have boycotted the strike action and resumed work for unknown reasons, leaving MMCET alone in the strike meant for the general welfare of all the lecturers.
It is yet unclear why the other four institutions decided to betray the cause and abandon MMCET in the thick of the battle. Consequently, the MMCET lecturers yesterday met to decide whether they should continue alone with the strike action or tow the line of the other colleges and resume work. The outcome of that meeting is yet unknown.
In a related development, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Minkailu Bah, has said over the popular Monologue programme that lecturers met him in his office and apologized for the strike action and promised to resume work. However, the minister said he was disappointed to hear two MMCET lecturers on Monologue talking on the strike action which, he said, had been resolved in his office.
But the two MMCET lecturers who were on the Monologue programme, Joseph Kongoli and Mr. Thullah, both of whom are executive members of the National Polytechnic Senior Staff Association, NPSSA, denied apologizing for the strike though they admitted meeting the minister. We are yet to ascertain whether the minister or the lecturers said the truth.
