Wednesday is Ramadan, Saudi Arabia announces

The holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, for a period of 29 or 30 days commences Wednesday, 10th July, 2013, announced the Royal Court in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today, quoting the Supreme Court.

“Tuesday, 9th July, 2013 will be the last day of Sha’aban, making Wednesday 10th July, the first day of Ramadan”, the Royal Court says in the announcement.

The Ramadan crescent was not sighted on Monday evening, the announcement stated.  Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court in Saudi Arabia called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent of the lunar month of Ramadan in the evening of Shaa’ban 29, 1434AH, corresponding to July 8, 2013.

The Supreme Court also called on whosoever sees the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan by naked eyes or through binoculars to report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the authority of the region’s governorate if there is no judge in the area where he sighted the crescent.

It further encouraged capable crescent observers to join the committees formed in the provinces for this purpose, but the moon was not sighted. It could be recalled that most of the astronomers had predicted that the holy month of Ramadan is likely to begin on Wednesday.
