The ceremony, which took place at the Great Hall of the People and which attracted officials of the Chinese Government and staff from the Sierra Leone Embassy was short but colorful. In his short statement, Ambassador Victor Bockarie Foh conveyed special greetings from His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone to President Xi Jinping, and the people of the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador Victor Bockarie Foh expressed deep appreciation to President Xi, the government and people of china for their continued support and intervention in many areas of economic, education, and technical cooperation to the government and the people of Sierra Leone. He used the occasion to reaffirm Sierra Leone’s commitment and support to the one-china policy, assuring further, that his appointment as Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China will deepen and strengthen the already existing cordial bilateral ties between the two countries and peoples for mutual benefit.
Speaking further, he assured the Chinese leadership of Sierra Leone’s readiness to always stand by china, also saying, his tenure as Ambassador will work towards further strengthening the long cordial relationship between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the All People’s Congress (APC), the ruling party in Sierra Leone. Ambassador Foh further expressed his readiness to forge the people-to-people relationship between the two countries as well as the party-to-party diplomacy
His Excellency Ambassador Foh also expressed gratitude to the government and the people of the People’s Republic of China for the hospitality accorded to His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and his delegation during his official visit to china, and to his humble self since his arrival to take up duty as Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, a country he referred as “this great country, the People’s Republic of China.” He ended by extending an invitation to President Xi to visit Sierra Leone thus fostering the ties between Sierra Leone and China.
Responding, President Xi Jinping spoke of how impressed he was with the remarks made by Ambassador Victor Foh, whilst welcoming him to China as Sierra Leone’s Ambassador. He also thanked Ambassador Foh for delivering warm greetings to him from President Koroma, the government and people of Sierra Leone “and for appointing you as Ambassador to China.”
President Xi further expressed optimism in the person of Ambassador Foh, saying, with such a high profile appointment given Ambassador Foh’s political standing in the ruling APC party in Sierra Leone, it shows the level of importance Sierra Leone attaches to China. He also said, the visit to China by President Ernest Koroma was a success as they both had fruitful discussions and “wonderful conversation.”
According to President Xi, both Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China share common friendly relations and assured that the bilateral relations between the two countries will grow from strength to strength. Such friendly relations between the two countries, he said, will further strength not just the bilateral relations between china and Sierra Leone, but will further help to promote the Sino-Africa relations.
China, President Xi went on, will continue to support development programmes in Sierra Leone, agreed upon for the mutual benefit of all sides and also called for further exchanges especially at the political level. By having Ambassador Foh in China, President Xi said, they now can keep to the direction of having substantial progress “in our relation”, saying “I have high hopes in you,” whilst also looking “forward to visiting Sierra Leone at a convenient time.”
Ambassador Victor Bockarie Foh succeeded Abubakarr Multi-Kamara as Ambassador to China. Until his appointment, he was Secretary-General for the governing APC party in Sierra Leone. He arrived in China to take up duty on 19th June and five days later, received President Ernest Koroma who was in China on an official invitation. He is also accredited to several other countries in the south-east Asian pacific region.
