President of Sierra Leone Market Women resigns
Freetown, July (SLENA) – The National President of the Sierra Leone Market Women’s Association, Madam Marie Vandy has informed the Executive and the general membership of her association about her resignation from office after 32 years of dedicated leadership.
Madam Vandy made this declaration last week at the YMCA Hall and the Ebenezer School hall at Circular Road in Freetown.
She said it was time for her bow out as leader after serving seven mayors in the Freetown municipality for thirty-two years.
In her opening address to the jam-packed audience of market women from various parts of the country, she reminded members of the association on the proposed election/selection process and notification by the executive Committee to replace her and her cabinet and expressed the hope that such election or selection shall be peaceful.
“With effect from today I have officially resigned and dissolved my Cabinet so as to give room for an official election/selection of a new and viable executive to run the affairs of the Association for the best interest of the people,” she declared amidst thunderous applause from the market women.
The outgoing president further pointed out that her decision to resign did not come by way of any threat but with due regard to her age, having had extensive consultations with Executive members of the association before she took that decision.
Highlighting some of her achievements while in office, Madam Vandy mentioned the acquisition of state lands for the construction of markets including public toilets especially in the Western Area and the Waterloo rural District.
Concluding, the outgoing president called for unity among members.
